The Effects of Thermal Conduction on Radiatively-inefficient Accretion Flows

چکیده
We quantify the effects of electron thermal conduction on the properties of hot accretion flows, under the assumption of spherical symmetry. Electron heat conduction is important for low accretion rate systems where the electron cooling time is longer than the conduction time of the plasma, such as Sgr A* in the Galactic Center. For accretion flows with density profiles similar to the Bondi solution (n[r] ∝ r), we show that heat conduction leads to super-virial temperatures, implying that conduction significantly modifies the dynamics of the accretion flow. We then self-consistently solve for the dynamics of spherical accretion in the presence of saturated conduction and electron heating. We find that the accretion rate onto the central object can be reduced by ∼ 1 − 3 orders of magnitude relative to the canonical Bondi rate. Electron conduction may thus be an important ingredient in explaining the low radiative efficiencies and low accretion rates inferred from observations of low-luminosity galactic nuclei. The solutions presented in this paper may also describe the nonlinear saturation of the magnetothermal instability in hot accretion flows. The Role of Thermal Conduction in Accretion Disks with Outflows
In this work we solve the set of hydrodynamical equations for accretion disks in the spherical coordinates (r,θ,ϕ) to obtain the explicit structure along θ direction. We study a two-dimensional advective accretion disc in the presence of thermal conduction. We find self-similar solutions for an axisymmetric, rotating, steady, viscous-resistive disk. We show that the global structure of an advec...
متن کاملThe Magnetoviscous-Thermal Instability
Accretion flows onto underluminous black holes, such as Sagittarius A* at the center of our galaxy, are dilute (mildly collisional to highly collisionless), optically thin, and radiatively inefficient. Therefore, the accretion properties of such dilute flows are expected to be modified by their large viscosities and thermal conductivities. Second, turbulence within these systems needs to transp...
متن کاملHot Accretion With Conduction: Spontaneous Thermal Outflows
Motivated by the low-collisionality of gas accreted onto black holes in Sgr A* and other nearby galactic nuclei, we study a family of 2D advective accretion solutions with thermal conduction. While we only impose global inflow, the accretion flow spontaneously develops bipolar outflows. The role of conduction is key in providing the extra degree of freedom (latitudinal energy transport) necessa...
متن کاملFeeding the black hole with condensing accretion flows: radiatively efficient and radiatively inefficient cases
We study the accretion flow of a hot gas captured by the black hole gravity in the presence of a thin cold accretion disk. Such geometrical arrangement is expected in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and in galactic X-ray binary systems because both hot and cold gases are present in the black hole vicinity. Previous astrophysical literature concentrated on the evaporation of the cold disk in the cl...
متن کاملConvection in radiatively inefficient back hole accretion flows
Recent numerical simulations of radiatively inefficient accretion flows onto compact objects have shown that convection is a general feature in such flows. Dissipation of rotational and gravitational energies in the accretion flows results in inward increase of entropy and development of efficient convective motions. Convectiondominated accretion flows (CDAFs) have a structure that is modified ...
